El Campo Culinary Places 2nd at Mystery Basket Competition
ECHS Culinary students, Jerlihya Moore, Serina Barron, Tiffany Salinas and Jose Mendoza placed 2nd out of 40 teams at the Auguste Escoffier High School Mystery Basket competition in Austin. The students were given a mystery basket of ingredients that included a steak, celery root and dried hibiscus and had to create a plated entrée within one hour. The students were judged by some big names in the Austin culinary scene (the executive chef of the Driscoll hotel, to name one). Final scores were based on safety and sanitation, organization, taste, cooking technique and plating. El Campo students prepared a pan seared steak with a mushroom/hibiscus sauce, whipped mashed potatoes with celery root and sautéed carrots. Each winner received a $1,250 scholarship and a chef’s knife kit.
